The Royal Docks are known for their strong sense of community, diverse residents and overall innovative spirit. They are currently undergoing an £8 billion renovation over the next 20 years, and are on their way to an impressive new chapter.
Having been built in 1855 to blaze the trail in world commerce, the docks are once again being transformed to become an influential destination in London. The revival of the area includes the addition of 30,000 new homes, and 42,500 jobs over the next two decades.
London’s Only Enterprise Zone
That’s right, the Royal Docks are London’s only Enterprise Zone and one of only 48 in England. This means the area benefits from tax breaks and other business incentives to attract investment. Since receiving its status in 2013, the Royal Docks has seen substantial investment in the DLR network, with further plans for commercial space, homes and jobs all underway.
Getting To The Royal Docks
Want to see it all for yourself? The area is exceptionally well connected, with the Elizabeth and DLR lines, Emirates Air Line cable cars (the only cable cars in London), and London City Airport all within easy reach. If you prefer to stay out of the traffic, there are plenty of dockside walking and cycle routes.
What’s On At The Docks
The Royal Docks area already has a number of exciting places and activities to be part of. From delicious food stops like The Windjammer and Cafe Namaste, to brewery and live music spot Husk Brewery (you can read more about our favourite food spots here). If you prefer to take in a bit of culture then there’s Duffy London Design Studio, Brick Lane Music Hall or Royal Wharf Community Dock. Finally, if you’re looking to get out and enjoy the fresh air of the Docks, there are plenty of parks in the area, including Thames Barrier Park, or take the opportunity to actually get out on the water itself with Wakeup Docklands.
