Finding green spaces to relax, exercise and enjoy in London can be tricky, but East London does have some gems to offer, many which are within easy reach of our Gallions Place development. Here are our favourite five parks of East London:
New Beckton Park
(20 minutes walk from Gallions Place)
New Beckton Park is a large, well-maintained space, complete with sports pitches and tennis courts. Great for working out with friends or loved ones in a place where you can have a kick around, or a quick game of tennis. There’s also a circular running path and outdoor exercise equipment if you’re preferring a solo walk, making it the perfect choice to get your steps in for the day, whilst also enjoying the great outdoors. If you’ve got children, there’s also a children’s playground and sand pit. You can access the park from Savage Gardens.
Royal Victoria Gardens
(15 minutes walk from Gallions Place)
Royal Victoria Gardens is right on the riverside, and offers a small and quiet green area near to Woolwich ferry. With a children's playground and a splash pool just off Woolwich Manor Way, it’s easy to keep the kids entertained. If you prefer a quieter stroll with the dog, then this park is perfect for a little walk and enjoying the river view. Dotted around the park are pieces of its docklands history, including a large steam hammer. As well as a bowling green, a tennis court and a football pitch.
Thames Barrier Park
(20 minutes on the tube or 8 minutes drive from Gallions Place)
Thames Barrier Park is another riverside area to enjoy, which was opened in 2000 (it was London’s largest new riverside park for over 50 years). Located in Silvertown and managed by the Greater London Authority, it’s a well maintained park with great views straight over the Thames. The seven hectares of green space features a basketball court, an outdoor gym and a children’s playground. If you would prefer to just relax, there’s a coffee shop and the beautiful sunken gardens (known as the ‘Green Dock’) to leisurely stroll around.
Jubilee Park
(25 minutes on the tube or 18 minutes drive from Gallions Place)
Jubilee Park is a beautiful green space right on top of Canary Wharf underground station. With several water features, the park offers a relaxing break amidst the city chaos. The park is also packed with trees, which make gorgeous scenery, and provides some well needed shade on sunny days. Surrounding the park are several eateries, so you can enjoy your favourite treat from the city, in the calm of the park.
Mudchute Park and Farm
(40 minutes on the tube or 16 minutes drive from Gallions Place)
Mudchute Park and Farm is a huge urban farm on the Isle of Dogs. With 32 acres of green space right in East London, it is a breath of fresh air, and brings a taste of the countryside into the city. It is a working farm, and run by a community charity group. The park offers some fantastic walks where you can see all of the farm animals, as well as educational activities for the kids all for free. If you want to stop for a bit of lunch, they have picnic spaces, or there’s also a kitchen onsite which is famous for its breakfast and brunches.
